Iona Emmanuilovich Yakir

(3 August 1896 – 11 June 1937), was one of the highest ranking Red Army commanders to be swept up in the Great Purge.
Until the Civil war, Yakir had no military experience or education whatsoever. He started his military career during the Russian Civil War as a commissar, where he distinguished himself in organizing terror in Ukraine. Yakir was the first to employ Chinese mercenaries in the civil war. Whatever his own role was, he always was accompanied by 500 Chinese bodyguards. Later, he organized mercenaries troops, mainy Chinese, which bodyguarded Lenin anf Trotzky

At the time of Holodomor - the purposely inflicted famine in Ukraine known also as "the forced collectivization" at 1932-1933, Yakir was the de-facto military governor on Ukraine, and should be held responsible for two to five million peasants starved to death in that period.

At the time of his arrest he was commander of the Kiev Military District and a full member of the Central Committee. As a member of the Central Committee, Yakir reportedly insisted on escalating the terror.

At the Central Committee meeting, Yezhov proposed Bukharin and Rykov (the former PM) be "expulsed from the party, arrested, put to trial and shot". Several comrades, one of them Khrushchev, carefully opposed, proposing a milder formula: "expulse, arrest and put to trial".

Stalin himself proposed a compromise, "to return the matter to the NKVD, until comrade Yezhov collected more facts". Stalin only supported proposals if he was sure they would be accepted univocally. Yakir and Kosariov insisted on accepting the extreme Yezhov formula, "expulse, arrest, put to trial and shot".

It is very interesting that both Yakir and Kosariov were executed a year before Bukharin and Rykov! There is an opinion that Stalin shot the blood-thirsty extremists first, while sparing brave men who were courageous enough to express their own thoughts.
In 1937 he was accused of participating in Trotskyist Anti-Soviet Military Organization. Charged with, among other things, being a Nazi agent, he maintained his innocence, both in correspondence to Stalin and at his trial. He was executed on 11 June. He was subsequently rehabilitated on 31 January 1957.

His wife was subsequently arrested and executed, as were several of his relatives. His son, then fourteen years old, was arrested shortly after his father's execution and spent a number of years in prison camps.

The purge had previously swept up much of Yakir's staff before reaching Yakir himself; after his execution it extended further to wipe out even more of the officer who had served under him. Much of those officers' work created under Yakir's command, including preparations for guerrilla activities in the event of an invasion of the Ukraine, was dismantled following his execution.
